"The Golden Apple," watercolor, ink.

Apples are present in many fairy tales, either poisonous or golden. It's been said they symbolize desire. The panels surrounding the apple don't illustrate any specific tale, but contain some common fairy tale elements. Hey, I'm an artist, not a writer!

"Gimli," pencil.

Gimli is a Dwarven fighter, and one of the toughest members of the Fellowship. Gimli is also a brutal exercise in costume and armor decoration. Lots of detail to lose yourself in, but I hoped to capture the look in his eyes too.

From my Sketchbook....."Frodo: Grey Havens," pencil.

The fourth and final in the Hobbit Elements series. I drew this one and titled it "Frodo: Water" and then someone said, "Oh how sad! You drew him at the shoreline. Is he getting ready to leave for Valinor, or is this scene on those shores?"

So: New title, and a new concept, sort of.

Nothing like a weepy Elijah-Wood-inspired Hobbit to chase those cares away. ;)

Private Commission SOLD
"Merry," pencil.

As promised, more hobbits, this time - Merry! I thought a lot about what element he should get, and finally decided on Fire for him and Water for Frodo. Merry seems more summery/warmer somehow, and Frodo - well - blue eyes, departure across the sea, seemed to just fit. Now that's the last one of the series, still yet to come...

Pippin

From my Sketchbook....."Pippin," pencil. SOLD

More thanks, this time to Billy Boyd, for being a fantastic Pippin.

Heavily reference-based, but not entirely. I basically looked away from the photo I was using at about 80% completion to give Pippin that special smirk and look in his eyes. This one got better reviews, even though Sam's my personal favorite. I suppose to some degree it's best not to love your little hobbits *too* much, it makes them harder to draw.....

From my Sketchbook....."Sam," pencil.

Hurray! And this one got signed by the man himself - Sean Astin. Take a look and see for yourself! If ya want more proof, check out the pics at the bottom of this page: Sam Costume Photo Gallery

Heavily referenced from a well known Two Towers movie still, I'm calling this number 2 in the Hobbit Elements series. Pippin gets an "Air" background, Merry gets "Fire".....
Sam is most definitely "Earth"!

"Gwaivorn," watercolor, gouache.

A character portrait for a friend. His name means literally "Wind-Dark" in the fictional Elven language. Okay, so I'm a Tolkien geek. So is my friend. We admit our weakness!

LOTR FAN ART's Fanbook Cover for Sean Astin
(using their own logo) watercolor, ink, watercolor pencil, digital.

I needed something simple and charming at an 8 1/2 x 11 size for this fanbook cover.
It was watercolored and drawn on my signature crinkle-dyed paper. I simplified everything, the vines and flowers are kept to two colors, and the hills are just shapes to suggest the Shire landscape. The star on the upper right is a nod one of Sam's quotes about Hope from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The logo is from the organization. I was careful to match the colors of the logo, particularly the greens, to my paint colors so it looked professional and unified.

"PowerPuff Girls 2020," watercolor, ink, gouache.

What would the PowerPuff girls look like at the age of 23? (Yeah it's been done, but none of them look like mine, so there!)

A good practice using colored gouache over larger areas, in the "graphics" I created for the background.

"Infinity Dragon II," watercolor, ink. SOLD

I re-did a similarly shaped dragon I painted several years ago. The image always felt very near to my heart and I've been planning to get a tattoo anyway, so this one was specifically designed to go across my back, right between the shoulderblades. :)

Haven't gotten the cash yet to do it, but when I do, there will be pictures!

Private Commission SOLD
"Gandalf the Grey," Graphite, Black Prismacolor pencil.

Gandalf from Fellowship, cradled in the wildness of Middle Earth, with that mysterious twinkle in his eye. I entered this one in There and Back Again.net's annual Lord of the Rings Fan Art contest, and was awarded Second Place.

Dewqueen

Private Commission SOLD
"The DewQueen vs. the Spider" Black Prismacolor pencill.

This illustration was basically a realization of a scene described as follows: The Fairy Queen gets trapped by the evil spider's web, but gets in a good shot with her magic wand. I hope she gets free, I think she might....

Perky Goth Fairy

Private Commission SOLD
"Perky Goth Fairy," Black prismacolor pencil.

This person wanted to meet the fairy fashion slave that was going through her "goth" phase, regardless of the complete lack of brooding personality to go along with it. I think she renamed herself "Gloomwing" or something like that, but who knows, it could just be a phase she's going through..

FrodoSketch

From my Sketchbook....."Frodo and the Ring," pencil.

"It makes me wonder at what time of his journey this was taken. The expression on his face shows both his desire and determination of overcoming the quest, while still showing the massive difficulties of his
travels and his struggle against the given odds and the power of the one ring calling to him... All he can do is slowly struggle along..."
~from a New Zealand LOTR fan 3/17/02

Dragonchase

"Dragonchase," black colored pencil on paper.

A little sci-fi, a little fantasy. The flying lure is my tribute to my own internet addiction (It's a two-button mouse!) and the ring is to honor the new Lord of the Rings film(s) and resulting (well-deserved) hype!

this one was published in the Baycon 2002 record.

Love Fairy

"Fairy Magic I - Love," colored pencil on Coquil board.

These started as an abstract color design. Then I drew the fairies on lightly in black pencil. They came right off the top of my head - what can I say! The top of my head must be a strange and interesting place.

Power Fairy

"Fairy Magic II - Power," colored pencil on Coquil board. SOLD

The first fairy was a female, this one's a male. He has a starfish in his hair as his ornament, whereas the gals have spiral shells. This is to carry out the male = angles, female = curves theme.

Peace Fairy

"Fairy Magic III - Peace," colored pencil on Coquil board.

Another guy with a starfish in his hair. This fairy is the one I like best.
Wouldn't it be nice to be this centered all the time -

Courage Fairy

"Fairy Magic IV - Courage," colored pencil on Coquil board. SOLD

She's diving forward, leaving her shell behind.

"Dawn Spell," pencil and ink on Coquil board. SOLD

Kandora

"Kandora," watercolor and watercolor pencil. Character portrait. SOLD

An elven ranger you *don't* want to meet in a dark alley!

I had fun picturing a character that had been already colorfully portrayed for many years by my friend Jen. An ongoing fantasy role-playing game gives us the opportunity to bring our characters to life over many years of play. So thanks, Jen, you did all the work....

Kiko+DragonSpirit

"Kiko and the Dragon Spirit," watercolor, colored pencil, and ink.

An illustration evocative of a fairy tale scene when a little chinese girl is surprised to meet a little glowing dragon in the bushes. (Maybe I should write the fairy tale that goes along with it someday!) As in "Mulan" this dragon's not too scary, but a mysterious gemlike treasure.

Jims Portrait

"Jim," charcoal. SOLD

Thanks to my new friend Jim who agreed to sit still for a half hour.
Also, thanks to Melissa for letting me borrow him. ;)

Ruby Sketch

From my Sketchbook...."Ruby," pencil.

Ruby is a Dwarven Warrior Queen, posing here in my imagination. She has been an AD&D character in active play for eight years.

Emmy Sketch

From my Sketchbook....."Emerald," pencil.

Emerald is a lovely young bard with attitude. I hoped to convey this particular snobbishness here.

Fat Bean!

Commercial
Commercial
"Fat Bean,"
pen and ink.

This illustration was done as a logo for the Fat Bean Coffee Company in Kona, Hawaii. The owner's idea was to show a coffee bean relaxing in the sun, using the coffee cup as a hot tub. "Fat Bean" ultra-premium coffee grows slowly creating a larger than normal bean and a richer flavor.

This product logo is rumored to be available on Hats, Tees, Mugs, and Plush. I also hear the coffee's pretty good, too.

Commercial
"CAM350," pencil and ink on coquil (digital.)

This was a multi-phase project for CAD Solutions, Inc. in 1993. The first two "broken bridge" panels were hand-drawn and the last panel was simple stock photography with a simple logo. I drew the first two panels for the outside of the booklet and the photo was displayed inside.
